DESS Newsletter

How do you sum up a term like this one?  Not an easy task, but as we come to the end of this week there is a tangible sense of pride in our whole DESS community and the way in which we have all adapted so quickly to this new enforced norm and overcome the many barriers that have presented themselves along the way.  DESS is very much a people focused organisation; a big family.  So, it is not surprising then that during this time of great challenge the care, compassion and consideration that individuals have shown to one another is something to take great pride in.

So this newsletter is one of great gratitude and appreciation for all the amazing members of our DESS community.  Thank you to you, our parents who have trusted in us this term and patiently supported us through the many, many changes.  Thank you to all our incredible site staff who are working tirelessly to ensure that our site is as clean and safe as possible.  Thank you to the best team of admin and support staff any school could ask for; behind the scenes you ensure that we continue to run as smoothly as possible.  Our amazing medical team, Nurse Anna, Nurse Susan and Dr. Francoise, have been invaluable, taking calls at all times of the day and night, and I would like to say a huge thank you on your behalf for their wisdom and patience during this time. I would also like to acknowledge the amazing support behind the scenes from Andrew Gibbs, our Principal/CEO and our wonderful Board of Trustees.

As for the teachers and teaching assistants, they have been nothing short of super heroes; the pure grit, ingenuity, creativity and bravery they have shown is beyond words.  Delivering the best possible learning whilst wearing a mask is truly exhausting and our staff have managed to achieve this day in day out for nearly 4 months.  Thank you team awesome, I salute you!

And our DESS children?  Well, they have proved themselves to be everything we ask for in our school vision; resilient, independent, confident but more than that, incredibly adaptable.  Please click on the link below to see some reflections of this term.

At this time of year, I think it is also only right to remember all those that have been less fortunate than ourselves.  This year will sadly be a very different one for many families.  Some will have lost family members, friends and for others their livelihood.  Our thoughts are with them.

In my assembly this morning I reminded the children that ‘Care’ has been our word for this year, taking care of ourselves, one another and the planet.  Being careful and showing care.  Whether you are traveling or staying in Dubai, please take great care and avoid any unnecessary risks to yourselves and your families over the break.

To those members of our community who are sadly leaving, we wish you well and for all those returning, I look forward to seeing you back at DESS again safely ready for a brand new year.

For all those who are celebrating I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and roll on 2021!
